-
Trying a Novel Approach
-

-
Celebrated sunbather, children's book author and befuddled royal
- SARAH FERGUSON, the Duchess of York, is apparently seeking to
- reinvent herself as Jackie Collins. Earlier this summer, Fergie
- phoned New York City literary-agent-to-the-Pope Morton Janklow
- as he was cruising the Baltic and asked him to represent her.
- According to news reports, Fergie has been trying to cut a $5
- million book deal for two as yet unwritten novels about royalty,
- spiced with autobiographical references. So far the duchess
- has received exactly one offer--for less than one-tenth her
- asking price.

-
Is He the Next Denzel?
-

-
He launched his career playing vulnerable characters battling
- the odds--a reluctant gangster in New Jack City, a kindly
- rapper in the comedy CB4. Next week ALLEN PAYNE will need all
- his inner wonderfulness as he leaps to romantic leading man
- in the love story Jason's Lyric. Payne's steamy sex scenes,
- claim the producers, had to be cut so the film could get an
- R rating. "Nothing was any more revealing than Color of Night
- or Basic Instinct," insists Payne. That should leave female
- viewers with plenty of hope.

-
Room Service
-

-
JOHNNY DEPP, so huggably beguiling as Edward Scissorhands and
- Gilbert Grape, is also the sort of passionate young actor who
- can really let go, the cost be damned. While staying at Manhattan's
- swank Mark Hotel, Depp trashed his room, smashing two 17th century
- paintings, a glass tabletop and a few shelves. Depp, who was
- with his considerably less aggressive girlfriend, model Kate
- Moss, racked up a $10,000 tab for his eruption and wound up
- getting arrested. Police said he was "possibly intoxicated."
- Kept awake by the incident was Depp's neighbor Roger Daltrey,
- formerly of those hotel-room-trashing progenitors the Who.

-
SEEN & HEARD
-

-
A top-ranked tennis player at 14, a mug shot with a drug charge
- at 17, JENNIFER CAPRIATI has had the sort of tumultuous adolescence
- unparalleled by most Sassy magazine readers. Now it seems that
- the prodigy is regaining her focus. Capriati, who left tennis
- more than a year ago and was arrested for marijuana possession
- in May, announced that she will return to competition in Zurich
- next month. "It's going to be different this time around," she
- said. "I'm not going to put a lot of pressure on myself."
-

-
TV's latest Star Trek series spun out of orbit when GENEVIEVE
- BUJOLD abandoned her starring role after two days of filming.
- The starship Voyager's first-ever female captain reportedly
- objected to the rigorous shooting schedule and heavy hair and
- makeup demands.
